Frequently Asked Questions

What is a psychologist?

Psychologists are trained in the assessment and treatment of a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, and relationship difficulties.

Clinical psychologists complete extensive postgraduate training and supervised practice, typically a minimum of five years focused on assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment. Many psychologists also develop specialist areas of expertise, such as couples therapy or trauma recovery.

What is a counsellor?

Counsellors typically complete at least two years of formal training, alongside ongoing professional development. Like psychologists, counsellors often develop areas of special interest and focus on supporting people to build resilience and navigate life’s challenges.

Both psychologists and counsellors aim to help people understand what’s getting in the way of their wellbeing and support positive change. The right choice often depends on your needs, preferences, and the kind of support you’re seeking.

What happens when I book an appointment?

An initial appointment provides space to talk about what’s been happening for you and what you’re hoping for. Nicole will work with you to understand your situation and discuss options that make sense for you.

This might involve:

- A brief consultation

- A short-term plan with practical tools

- Or a longer-term approach for more complex concerns

You’ll be supported to understand why certain options are recommended and what you can expect moving forward.

How much does it cost to work with Nicole one-on-one?

Nicole offers three consultation options to suit different needs:

25-Minute Discovery Call – $125 (incl. GST)

A short, supportive session to help you decide your best next step. Whether you’re considering individual or couples sessions, or a Getting the Love You Want workshop, you’ll talk through your situation, explore your goals, and leave with practical tips you can start using straight away.

50-Minute Consultation – $249 (incl. GST)

A standard appointment for ongoing individuals or couples work. You’ll explore concerns in more depth, understand contributing factors, be introduced to Nicole’s approach, and get guidance on next steps.

80-Minute Consultation – $375 (incl. GST)

Recommended for initial appointments. This extended session includes a thorough assessment of relationship dynamics, guidance on the most helpful support, introduction to relationship skills, and help setting shared goals and a plan forward.

What is a psychological evaluation?

Some clients request a psychological evaluation, which typically involves one or two sessions focused on assessment and recommendations.

These evaluations can help clarify what’s going on, identify contributing factors, and guide next steps. Cognitive or neuropsychological assessments may also be used when concerns relate to learning, attention, or cognitive functioning.

If you’re unsure whether an evaluation would be helpful, this can be discussed during an initial conversation.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is required. You’re welcome to contact the practice directly.

If your GP has referred you, you can still get in touch yourself, or your GP may contact the practice on your behalf.

Working with other healthcare providers

Nicole believes the best care is often collaborative. Where helpful, she can work alongside your GP or other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated and informed support.

With your consent, this may include sharing updates or making referrals to other trusted professionals when appropriate.

What if one partner is more motivated than the other?

This is very common and it doesn’t mean the relationship can’t improve. In many couples, one partner is more aware that something isn’t working or feels more ready to seek support.

Nicole’s approach is designed with this in mind. The Getting the Love You Want workshop, in particular, helps both partners gain shared understanding and practical tools at the same time, rather than placing responsibility on one person to “do the work.” Many couples find that once both partners feel understood and less blamed, motivation naturally increases.

You don’t need to be on exactly the same page to begin, just willing to explore things together.

Do you work with individuals who aren’t in relationships?

Yes. Nicole works with individuals whether they are single, partnered, or navigating changes in their relationships.

Individual therapy can support people with anxiety, trauma, stress, addiction, grief, life transitions, and relationship patterns that keep repeating. Some people come to work on themselves before entering a relationship, while others want support alongside changes happening in their current or past relationships.

Individual work often focuses on increasing self-understanding, emotional safety, and practical skills that support healthier relationships with others and with yourself.

How long before we might notice change?

There’s no single answer, as every person and relationship is different. However, many clients report feeling some relief or clarity relatively early, sometimes even after the first few sessions or during a workshop.

One of the reasons Nicole recommends starting with a shared learning experience, such as the Getting the Love You Want workshop, is that couples often notice shifts quickly once they have practical tools and a shared way of understanding what’s happening between them.

Change doesn’t require perfection. Small shifts in awareness, communication, and emotional safety can create meaningful momentum over time.

Confidentiality

Your privacy is taken very seriously. All personal client information is kept confidential and securely stored in locked files with restricted access.

Information is not shared with anyone without your consent, except in rare situations where there are legal or safety obligations (for example, immediate risk or concerns involving minors). If you have any questions about confidentiality, you’re encouraged to discuss them at any time.

Fees and payment

Full payment or a minimum 30% deposit is required at the time of booking. The remaining balance must be paid prior to your appointment.

Payments can be made online via credit card or EFTPOS, or through internet banking.

Most clients self-fund their sessions. Some may be eligible for partial reimbursement through private health insurance. If this applies to you, full payment is required upfront and you can then seek reimbursement directly from your provider. Monthly summaries of paid invoices can be provided on request to support this process.

If payment is a concern, instalment options can be arranged. My goal is to make my services accessible within your circumstances, so please feel free to get in touch.

Cancellation policy

Appointments require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice for cancellation or rescheduling. Missed appointments or late cancellations are charged at the full appointment fee.

For Monday appointments, cancellations must be made by the same time on the previous Friday. This policy also applies during holiday periods.
